Obituary for Denis Claude Lortie

Lortie, Denis (1971-2022)

On Wednesday, June 15th 2022 just a month away from his 51st birthday, at Health Sciences North, Sudbury, Denis Lortie lost his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his beloved wife of 28 years Carole (née Perrin), his children Cassandra-Lee Philippe (Mike Mongrain), Daniel Perrin (Kelley Hearn), Normand Philippe and Maverick Lortie (Karma Grata), his mother Rachelle Lortie (Don Guitard) and his sister Carole Levesque (Jean-Marc Levesque).

Denis was not an ordinary man, every child and dog he ever met instantly loved him which proves how kind and loving he truly was. He had a heart of gold.

Denis was born in Sturgeon Falls to Claude and Rachelle Lortie but little did they know they were raising a legendary man. He made many friends as he grew up and if he claimed you as family, no matter the distance he tried to keep in touch. One such individual from his childhood that meant the world to him was Bernard Fournel. One of the first people he wanted to reach out to, apart from family, when he was diagnosed was his best high school friend and brother Bernie.

Denis also played hockey and was a menace on skates. He enjoyed every moment of it and was affectionately known as "Killer".

After a storybook romance, Denis married Carole. She had children from a previous relationship, Cassandra-Lee and Normand. From the time they became a couple, he took those children on as his own, raised them, counseled them, provided for them and loved them with all his being. They also had a son together, Maverick, whom he loved and cherished deeply and supported him through some very tough life choices. He had a son from a previous relationship, Daniel Perrin, who he supported financially, loved fiercely, and worked hard to build a relationship with over the years despite not always being present in his life.

As well as raising two kids that were not of his own blood, he also befriended his wife's best friend and brother of another mother Joel Crepaud who became his partner in shenanigans; someone he could count on and a dearest friend and brother.

Denis was a giver, a caregiver, a counselor. He was a hard worker and his family were always cared for even if he had to sacrifice his wants and needs to make it happen. He held various jobs before becoming the king of the road and made many friends along the way. When he became a truck driver he had found his calling. He had diesel fuel in his veins and a love of the open road. So much so that he and his wife planned a cross Canada RV trip after the chemo. He traveled the mountains for years and as one person said, he was the king of the coquihalla. He worked 6 days a week for most of his career. He made many friends across the country, coached many new drivers, and was always available if you needed some of his wisdom or even just a good laugh. Most of the 28 years he shared with his wife and children was through phone calls and texts. When news of his cancer spread, many of his trucker friends came to support him, cheered him on, prayed for him. The family would like to acknowledge all of his friends for their love and support.

He lost his father in 2020. It made him so sad to leave his sister Carole, whom he loved dearly, and his loving mother Rachelle so soon after the loss of this legendary man. Denis loved his family very much and would drop anything to be of service to them, lend a hand, an ear, a shoulder. He was grateful for his uncle Raymond's support after his father's death and throughout his own illness.

He was going to be semi-retired this year so he could finally enjoy the fruits of his labor with his wife. They had spent years perfecting their small patch of paradise and he was finally going to enjoy everything that he worked so hard for. He was finally going to be able to spend time with his wife who was his best friend, his favorite, his only. He loved her fiercely. He wanted to spend time in his shop tinkering with his kids. He wanted to be with his grandchildren Ryder, Troy, Haylee, Mikayla and Maylee and watch them grow. Instead, he was diagnosed with cancer in mid-March and deemed terminal in April. He fought hard to stay with everyone he loved and made sure everything at the farm was ready for his wife in case he passed away. Always more concerned with others than himself. His life ended too soon.

He was a man of strength, courage, integrity. He was loyal, loving and compassionate. His life force filled any space he was in. He was a joker and a teaser, a story teller, loved fiercely and protected those he loved. He gave his time freely to help anyone he could. He will be missed deeply by all who knew him. The world seems empty without him.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Pearce and the staff at the Northeast Cancer Center and the Health Sciences North Emergency Department for the compassionate care. A big thank you to all those who rallied to his side for all the love, prayers and support. Cremation arrangements in care of Theoret Bourgeois Funeral Home, Sturgeon Falls. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
