C’est avec beaucoup de peine que la famille annonce que Madeleine est décédée très paisiblement pendant son sommeil, le dimanche 22 mars, 2020. Elle avait 96 ans.
L’ainée parmi les enfants du Dr. Paul O. Coulombe (feu) et feu Léona Pilon, elle était très fière d’être la grande sœur, survécue par Marcelle de Montréal, et prédécédée par Camille, Ghislaine, Pauline Hébert (feu Jean-Louis), Guy (Gisèle) et Jacques (Gail). Épouse bien aimée pour 61 ans de feu Bruno Vannier, et mère dévouée de Camille Semple (John) d’Ottawa, Joanne Laughland (David) de Chapleau, et Sylvie de North Bay, toutes 3, enseignantes comme leur mère. Ses petits-enfants gardent de précieux souvenirs: James Vannier (Erin), Scott Laughland (Lesley), Mark Laughland (Tammy), Ian Laughland (Pascale), Chantal (Patrick), Ariane et Nicolas. Six arrière-petits-enfants ont eu le bonheur de connaitre et d’aimer leur ‘Gigi’ : Hazel, Cole, Dawson, Ryker, Alexi et LoÏc. Plusieurs neveux et nièces manqueront leur tante bien spéciale.
Élevée à Sturgeon Falls, Madeleine était une étudiante douée, et pendant la Dépression, elle poursuivit ses études à l’extérieur, graduant le l’Université d’Ottawa au jeune âge de 19 ans et puis obtenant son diplôme pour enseigner. Pendant et après la Deuxième Grande Guerre, elle enseigna au Timmins High and Vocational. Dans une époque où les femmes mariées avec enfants laissaient leur carrière, Madeleine retourna à l’enseignement au Sturgeon Falls Secondary School pendant les années 50, et plusieurs de ses élèves se souviendront d’elle avec affection, inclus sa grande amie Annette (Giguère) Ferris. Étant spécialiste en langues, notre famille la considérait notre gourou des caprices de grammaire et d’orthographe. Portant une grande valeur à l’éducation et à l’excellence, elle en inspira ses filles et ses petits-enfants. Une apprenante toute sa vie, elle retourna aux études dans les années 70 pour apprendre l’Espagnol.
À Sturgeon, depuis 1952, elle faisait partie d’un groupe de neuf femmes extraordinaires qui se rencontraient pour jouer aux canastas, et avec qui elle développa de profondes amitiés pour 7 décennies. Elle laisse derrière les dernières ‘Madelons’, grandes amies Marie-Paule Rochon et Rachelle Marleau.
On se souviendra affectueusement d’elle comme l’épouse qui sans relâche a aimé et appuyé son ‘Honey B.’ au travers de ses aventures de pilote, d’un commerce de famille exigeant et d’une longue maladie. Elle a été une mère toujours présente, dédiant temps et énergie pour les activités de ses enfants, autant ballet, musique, patinage et comme de raison leur éducation. Elle dédia un nombre d’années comme bénévole au club de patinage de North Bay, Memorial Gardens étant devenu notre deuxième chez-nous! Elle était la grand-maman qui jouait avec grand plaisir avec ses petits-enfants, et la Gigi au sourire éclatant quand ses arrière-petits-enfants lui rendaient visite. Son foyer était toujours accueillant et décoré avec goût, ses talents de cuisinière étaient reconnus par tous et ses tartes sans pareilles amenaient toujours des étincelles dans les yeux de son Bruno. Avec une élégance subtile, elle exemplifiait la bonté, l’amabilité et l’importance d’être généreux d’esprit envers tous.
La famille remercie avec grand cœur tout le personnel du Pavillon et du foyer Au Château (3e plancher), autant les médecins, infirmiers et infirmières, que les travailleurs de soins personnels, de cuisine et d’entretien-ménagers, qui pendant plus de 5 ans lui ont apportée d’excellents soins et compassion.
Une célébration privée de sa vie aura lieu à une date future. En son nom, la famille a fait un don à l’église Holy Spirit de Garden Village, sa paroisse saisonnière, puis permanente pour presque 50 ans. It is with much sadness that the family shares the news that Madeleine passed away very peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, March 22, 2020. At the age of 96, she recently declared to her doctor: “I’ve had a good run!”
The oldest daughter of the late Dr. Paul O. Coulombe and late Léona Pilon of Sturgeon Falls, Madeleine was the proud big sister of 6, survived by Marcelle of Montreal and pre-deceased by Camille, Ghislaine, Pauline Hébert (late Jean-Louis), Guy (Gisèle) and Jacques (Gail). Loving wife for 61 years of the late Bruno Vannier and devoted mother of Camille Semple (John) of Ottawa, Joanne Laughland (David) of Chapleau and Sylvie of North Bay, all 3, teachers like their mother. She will be lovingly remembered and missed by her grand-children James Vannier (Erin), Scott Laughland (Lesley), Mark Laughland (Tammy), Ian Laughland (Pascale), Chantal (Patrick), Ariane and Nicolas. Six great-grandchildren were fortunate enough to know and love their ‘Gigi’, as they affectionately called her: Hazel, Cole, Dawson, Ryker, Alexi and Loïc. So many nieces and nephews will miss a special aunt.
Raised in Sturgeon Falls, Madeleine was a gifted student and during the Depression, pursued her studies graduating from the University of Ottawa at the tender age of 19 and then earning her Teaching Certification. During and after WWII, she taught at Timmins High and Vocational. Then, in an era when married women with children abandoned their careers, she broke with this tradition in the early 1950s, teaching at Sturgeon Falls Secondary School, and is remembered fondly by former students, in particular Annette (Giguère) Ferris. As a language specialist, Madeleine was known in the family as the guru of the vagaries of grammar and spelling and instilled in her children and grandchildren the pride of learning and the value of excellence. As a life-long learner she returned to night school in the 1970s to become fluent in Spanish.
In Sturgeon Falls, she was part of an amazing group of nine women who began meeting for an evening of canasta in the early 1950s then forming deep friendships for the next six decades. She will be sadly missed by the last of the ‘Madelons’, Rachelle Marleau and Marie-Paule Rochon.
Madeleine will be lovingly remembered as the wife who steadfastly supported and loved her ‘Honey B.’, through his flying adventures, a demanding family business and a long illness. She was the mom who was always on hand, sacrificing time and energy for the well-being of her children, be it for figure skating, music, dance and of course their education. For many years she volunteered for the North Bay Figure Skating Club, Memorial Gardens having become our second home! She was the grandmother who had great fun for hours with her grandchildren and the great-grandmother (GiGi) who marveled at these wee ones who brought her such joy. Her home was always warmly decorated and inviting, with aromas of her famous cooking and her legendary pies, which always put a twinkle in her Bruno’s eyes. With quiet elegance, she avoided attention to herself, exemplifying kindness, and the importance of being generous towards others.
The family is so thankful for the staff of Le Pavillon and Au Château 3rd floor, doctors, nurses and PSWs, dietary and housekeeping, who cared for her with such professionalism and compassion over the last 5 ½ years.
A small private celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In her name, the family has made a donation to the Church of the Holy Spirit of Garden Village, her parish seasonally, then permanently for almost 50 years. We invite you to support the parish if you wish or, the Garden Village Culture and Heritage Program or, the Sturgeon Falls Food Bank.
