Lachance, Rock (1969-2020)

2019 was a challenging year for me. In April, I lost my beloved brother Ken. In July the Franciscan world lost a gem, Brother Ed Coughlin. Both went suddenly. Although, I believe that they are happily in the arms of God, the question was asked at Ed’s prayer service before his passing, “God, why are you taking one of our best?”

I would like to echo that same sentiment. “God, why have you taken one of our best?” I hope that God will not be mad at me for questioning Rock’s departure. All three men were fairly young, and had dreams of future progress.

Rock served Franciscan Ministries some years ago and gave part of his heart to the very poor in Jamaica. He came with a group of 70 plus enthusiastic students from Sturgeon Falls. He was not alone. His friends, Marcel Bougie, Dan Richard, and of course his father Roger were like the Musketeers. They were a strong team, a disciplined and efficient team, who encouraged those values to their students and to our Jamaicans, they did so with a great deal of fun. The group thoroughly enjoyed their tour in Braes River and on the Porziuncola Farm. They loved Stacy Biggs’ meals of grilled chicken, steamed fish and of course with our famous home baked bammies. Sturgeon Falls built two and three 16x16 or 12x12 houses each time that they came. They visited the three schools in the area and were a delight for the children. How can we not miss them!

In gratitude for Rock and all at Sturgeon Falls, I have arranged a few liturgies (mass), to be celebrated for the life of this wonderful person.

On Monday, May 25, 2020 – Mass will be celebrated in Ireland by Archbishop Jude Okolo, the Vatican Nuncio in Ireland.

On Tuesday, May 26, 2020 - Mass will be celebrated in the Convent Chapel at Immaculate Conception Convent by Fr. Mario Burton.

On Wednesday, May 27, 2020- Mass will be celebrated in Port Antonio, Jamaica by Msgr. Michael Palud. Superior of the Congregation of Oratory in Jamaica.

On Thursday, May 29, 2020- Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Thomas Dynetius for all friends and benefactors of Franciscan Ministries.

During the first week of June, mass will continue to be celebrated by two young priests in Jamaica-
Fr. Rohan Tulloch, S.J. – head of the few Jesuits in Jamaica.
Fr. Collin Henriques – Pastor of the Immaculate Conception Church in Stony Hill, Jamaica.

Fr. Don Chambers, who is presently stationed in Trinidad & Tobago, W.I.

Pax et bonum,
Peace, all good, love & blessings

Sister Grace Yap, O.S.F.

Our sincere condolences go out to the family!
Rock was THE best coach a young boy could have. He welcomed Xander to a hockey team from outside the community, and from the moment he introduced him to the team, ensured he was a true member of their already established hockey family. It was always clear that this man put his heart into everything he did, and has forever played a major impact on the lives of the young people he worked with!

I remember in high school Mr Lachance encouraged us in civics class not to chose the career that made us the most money, but to choose a career that, ten years from now, we would find ourselves waking up and being excited about the work we get to do. My sincerest condolences to his family. Mr Lachance was a good man and a great teacher. He will be missed.
