Obituary for David Raymond Stewart

David Raymond Stewart
After living a long and very full life, it is with sadness that the family of David Raymond Stewart of Cache Bay announces his passing peacefully at West Nipissing General Hospital, Sturgeon Falls on Thursday August 23, 2012 at the age of 95 years. Born July 2, 1917 in Toronto, Dave was the son of David (“Long Dave”) and Jane (née Fike) Stewart of Cache Bay. Married to Cecile Lafleche for 42 years until her too early passing at age 64 in 1983. Dave was an avid outdoorsman, decoy carver and hunter, shooting his last duck at age 90 on Lake Nipissing where he and Cecile spent many seasons at their island and “first home”. He was also known for his historical knowledge of many Cache Bay families, the logging history of the region and his many articles in Community Voices. A WW II RAF/RCAF veteran, he returned to Cache Bay to continue working for Geo. Gordon Lumber mill until its closure in 1964 and retiring from North Bay Hydro and moving back to Cache Bay with Cecile in 1982. Dave is survived by his children, Derek Stewart (Louise) Field, ON, Heather Robertson (John) Lively, ON; grandchildren Luke Stewart (Sherry) Grand Prairie, ALTA, Julie Stewart, Chilliwack, BC, Andrea (Robertson) Tiffin (Paul) Tupperville, ON, Tyler Robertson, Kitchener-Waterloo, ON; and great grandchildren Candice, Tanner, Ashley, Amanda, Sonya, Shane, Jack, Sam and Liv. It was Dave’s instruction that there be no funeral service and that he be cremated. There will be a private family celebration of his life. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society. (cheques only). The family wishes to thank Dr. Bourgault and the many nursing staff who provided their professional support and compassionate care during Dave’s short hospital stay. We are also very grateful for the support and want to acknowledge Jan Rainville, CCAC Case Manager and especially Personal Support Workers Claude Strasbourg and Sylvie Lacroix who made it possible for Dave to fulfill his adamant wishes to continue living in his own home until hospitalization a week ago. Arrangements in care of Théorêt Bourgeois Funeral Home, Sturgeon Falls
