Obituary for Alcide Giroux

Alcide Giroux
Giroux, Alcide “Ti Loup” 1945-2018
With heavy hearts but with gratitude for a life well lived, the Giroux family announces with deep sadness the sudden and unexpected death of a man “full of dreams and plans for the future”, Alcide Giroux on Tuesday February 20, 2018 at the age of 72 years. Son of the late Philippe Giroux, who Alcide said was born with a built in GPS ,and the late Exilda Giroux who always had baked cookies on the old wood stove. Alcide was predeceased by his precious wife Pat (née Leger) on May 30, 2011. “We had been together for fourty-four years and nine months. It was a very sad day but I was consoled a little when I read what she had wrote; I HAD A GREAT LIFE”. Ti-Loup found renewed love and happiness once more when he met and married Denise Beaudry in later years. Very proud father of his sons Robin and Serge (Tisha) both of Sturgeon Falls. Alcide will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, Aimée, Anik and Samina as well as by his great grandson Ethan. Loving brother of Maurice (Claire) of River Valley, Marie Jeanne Vezina Theriault (Albert) and Simon (Linda) all of Val Caron, Bernadette Denis (Michel) of Hanmer, Gisèle Giroux of Windsor and Jean (Nicole) of Sturgeon Falls. Predeceased by his sisters Gilberte Denis (Jean Yves of Sudbury) and Henriette Michaud (Conrad of Windsor).

Alcide dedicated much of his career to serving the fur industry and society. As a volunteer, he was active on numerous boards, committees and in executive positions in prominent organizations including The Fur Institute of Canada, the Ontario Trappers Association and the Trappers International Marketing Service.
Alcide was a key spokesperson for trappers with the media, government, and in many international forums in the US, Argentina, New Zealand, Australia, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Holland, Belarus and elsewhere. Above all, he promoted Canada as the world leader in the responsible and sustainable use of wild furbearers, and in the development of humane trapping standards and pioneering trapper-education programs.
Alcide was one of the first trappers to reach out to the broader society to explain the unique role of trappers in conservation efforts. His work was recognized with several industry awards including the Victor Goodman Award (Furriers Guild of Canada, 1987), Lloyd Cook Award for excellence in trapping, trapper education, and promoting public understanding of wildlife management (2001) Maurice Memorial Award (Fur Council of Canada, 2005), and Chevalier de la Confrèrie des Culs d’Ours, France (2001).
Alcide’s autobiography, My First 60 Years Enjoying Nature as a Trapper, provides a unique record of a life lived close to the land, of his love and respect for nature, and of his loyalty to the traditions of his ancestors.
The family will receive friends at the Theoret Bourgeois Funeral Home, Sturgeon Falls on Friday February 23rd 2018 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 24th 2018 at 10:00 am., in Ste Rose de Lima Church, River Valley. The celebration of Alcide’s life with reception will continue after the funeral mass in the gymnasium of Christ-Roy school, River Valley. Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Fur Harvesters or the charity of your choice would be appreciated. (Cheques only.)
